South Dakota Amazing Monuments & Exploration

Our quick night in Wyoming was spent at a Harvest Host in Gillette and it just so happened that they were having their demolition derby that night! So what did we do…? Went to watch some cars crash, of course! The boys were quite entertained and Bentley even met some new friends that he ran laps with around the grass.

The Harvest Host was called “Our Wyoming Life” in the HH app and it was a cute little farm with electric hookups for $15/night. We bought some meats from their little farm store for the freezer and enjoyed feeding the animals.

Saturday morning we had a quick 2.5 hour drive from Wyoming to the Mt Rushmore KOA. When we pulled into the campground we were quite in awe with how big it was and how many activities they offer- swimming pools, water slide, horseback riding, restaurants, playgrounds, splash pad, ATV rentals and more! Our original plan was to stay 2 nights but we decided to extend an extra night so we could have 2 full days and 3 nights to explore the area. That afternoon we setup and a huge storm came through down pouring with thunder and lightning… it made great mud puddles for the boys! After it cleared up we then explored with a bike ride around the campground to listen to live music followed by a glow stick dance party! 💃🏼🪩

Our first full day around Mt Rushmore area we went to explore some caves… unfortunately they wouldn’t let us do the tour with the boys in backpacks so we just did a mini hike.

From there we headed to Keystone to check out the town (and give the boys a good car ride nap) before entering the Mt Rushmore Monument!

Mt Rushmore was a pretty cool place! It was amazing to see in person and read about the history of how it was created- wow! 🤩

Reading about how Mt Rushmore was created
Quite possibly the most hilarious moment ever since having Bentley… while waiting for the night ceremony I didn’t realize he went down to the stage and Kevin had been filing him… watch to the end when the whole crowd of thousands of people started cheering and hollering when he went on stage and posed 🤣🤣🤣

On our second full day we did a steam engine train ride from Hill City to Keystone 🚂 it was a hot day so the boys didn’t behave too well in the heat and we realized they maybe aren’t as excited about train rides as daddy is…

We look forward to returning and exploring more around the Mt Rushmore area since we didn’t make it to Crazy Horse or some of the other cool towns in the area. It was time to hit the road and head East towards Michigan! On our way we stayed at Harvest Hosts in South Dakota, Minnesota, and a county campground in Wisconsin. On the road again…..

Leaving Minnesota to Wisconsin (cheese land)! We stayed at a county campground on the lake in Madison, Wisconsin which was a super cute town that we really enjoyed. We visited the FREE zoo then walked a little around town.

We left Wisconsin and did a 4 hour drive to get to Michigan where we stayed at one final Harvest Host before arriving at our friends lake house in Brooklyn, Michigan! Next fun was a week in Michigan on the lake! 🚤💦
